a practice.

Instead of ‘references’, ‘site’ and ‘programme’, used in the jargon to refer to a project’s horizons, we prefer to speak of ‘models’, ‘place’ and ‘uses’. While ‘references’ conjure precise moments in the great history of Art and Architecture, models encompass more timeless grammars and more everyday situations. While ‘site’ proposes a rational analysis according to a given framework, place invites us to practise a more attentive, a more specific reading. And while ‘programme’ is deterministic, uses can be unexpected or predictable, inappropriate or suitable, incompatible or reconcilable. No matter how specific they may be, models, place and uses are never sufficient in themselves to bring out a single project. They lead rather to the identification of a number of specific principles that bring to light a finite but vast number of potential projects. Two paths then open up, whether parallel or convergent: by trying out all the potential projects we can see a possibility emerge from among others and/or a sufficient number of other principles combine with the first so that the outlines of one and only one project come into focus. These principles are the themes that permeate our projects persistently. They characterize our practice of architecture. Uses structure themselves in such a way as to form a family of elements, spaces condense in the roundness of the building so that other spaces embrace its void, the structure is elevated to the level of ornament, the project is drawn with a rubber rather than with a pencil so as to achieve the qualities of déjà-là, already there …
